Soliloquotes

The soliloquist stops to listen, for there is much to learn from other people’s words. When Wisdom or Grace distills her lessons into a few sweet words, the essence is worth tasting over and over again…

To be commanded to love God at all, let alone in the wilderness, is like being commanded to be well when we are sick, to sing for joy when we are dying of thirst, to run when our legs are broken. But this is the first and great commandment nonetheless. Even in the wilderness — especially in the wilderness — you shall love him.Frederick Buechner

Simple, clear purpose and principles give rise to complex and intelligent behavior. Complex rules and regulations give rise to simple and stupid behavior. Dee Hock, quoted in Getting Things Done

Integrity does not allow us to create a theology that fails to address both internal and external realities. If we cannot meaningfully address the inevitable reality of loneliness, then we are destined to live in the strength of denial and perpetuate an understanding of Christianity that is blind to real life and insensitive to human need. Good theology brings the character of God to earth and reflects on the dangerous, anxiety-ridden material of life. ~Tom Varney, Loneliness

We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mudpies in the slums because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased. ~ C.S. Lewis

Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm. ~ Winston Churchill

If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare composed poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, “Here lived a great street sweeper, who did his job well.“Dr. Martin Luther King

We need a witness to our lives.  There’s a billion people on the planet, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything.  The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things, all of it, all of the time, every day.  You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it.  Your life will not go unwitnessed because I will be your witness’. ~Susan Sarandon’s character in “Shall We Dance”
